Bernard van Orley speelde een sleutelrol in het artistieke leven in Brussel en Zuid-Nederland in de eerste helft van de 16e eeuw. Hij was hofschilder van Margaretha van Oostenrijk en van Maria van Hongarije, ontwierp wandtapijten en glas-in-loodramen en stond aan het hoofd van een van de grootste ateliers van zijn tijd. Zijn kunst is diep verankerd in de Brusselse traditie en de ‘narratieve’ stijl die haar eigen is, maar Van Orley wist ook eigentijdse invloeden – zoals Rafaël en Dürer – te verwerken tot een nieuw en invloedrijk idioom. In de catalogus komen de verschillende gebieden van Van Orley’s creatie aan bod (schilderwerk, wandtapijten, glas-in-loodramen) maar ook het milieu waarin hij evolueerde, met de nadruk op zijn activiteit als hofschilder. De presentatie van al zijn gekende werken, zowel het corpus aanwezig op de tentoonstelling als de werken die niet konden reizen voor de gelegenheid, maken van deze catalogus een referentiemonografie gewijd aan de kunstenaar, tot nu toe ontbrekend in de uitgeverswereld.

Recent scholarship increasingly defines Islamophobia as a form of racism. This article claims that such scholarship mistakenly overlooks the categories of religious and cultural bigotry as part of Islamophobia. Although anti-Islam bigotry is intertwined with anti-Muslim racism, it is conceptually distinct. It is important to distinguish between racist and non-racist forms of Islamophobia in order to evaluate contemporary Islamophobic discourses in an accurate way. If we simply conflate Islamophobia with anti-Muslim racism, we either fail to identify certain instances of Islamophobia as problematic, or are compelled to apply the charge of racism too broadly. This article therefore conceptually explores the similarities and differences between anti-Muslim racism and anti-Islam bigotry in Europe today. It finds that although anti-Islam bigotry implies a prejudicial rejection of an essentialized idea of Islam, it allows for the possibility that Muslims convert or assimilate. As such, it differs from anti-Muslim racism, which implies the assumption that the negative characteristics associated with Islam are innate and unchangeably linked to Muslims.

Samen met curator Angelique Campens en Architecture Curating Practice duikt Bozar de archieven in van architect en beeldhouwer Jacques Moeschal (1913-2004). Als leerling aan de Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussel raakte hij al snel gefascineerd door de sculpturale mogelijkheden van beton. In het kielzog van de democratisering in het naoorlogse België, staat Moeschal bij het grote publiek vooral bekend om zijn monumentale beeldhouwwerken die integraal deel uitmaken van het autosnelwegennetwerk. Passanten genieten volop mee wanneer ze vanuit hun wagen plots op een imposant werk van Moeschal stoten. De beelden werden landmarks op onze eentonige autostrades. Aan de hand van plannen, filmfragmenten, maquettes en interventies van hedendaagse kunstenaars zal de tentoonstelling dieper inzoomen op de relatie tussen kunst en architectuur in het onderbelichte werk van Moeschal.

"The group exhibition WOMAN : The Feminist Avant-Garde of the 1970s: Works from the SAMMLUNG VERBUND, Vienna, unites 450 works by 29 female artists. The history of art showed the 'image of woman' as the product of male projections. In the 1970's, for the first time, female artists themselves created 'the image of woman'. They studied their own bodies and grasped the prospect of determined feminine identities in a provocative, radical, poetic and ironic manner. Curator Gabriele Schor refers to this movement as the 'Feminist Avant-Garde' emphasizing the pioneering and collective role that these artists have played for the last four decades."
